Afternoon: Visit the Summer Palace (about 2 hours). The rippling Kunming Lake, the resting place of Empress Dowager Cixi, is the eyes of the Summer Palace. The boats passing by on the lake make the entire scene lively. This was once the retirement home of Empress Dowager Cixi and one of the "Three Mountains and Five Gardens". The east road of Wanshou Temple is the abbot's courtyard, and the west road is the palace courtyard. Empress Dowager Cixi once lived here. So it is also known as the Palace of Empress Dowager Cixi, where Emperor Qianlong celebrated his mother's birthday three times. The Long Corridor of the Summer Palace was built during the Qianlong period and was damaged during the invasion of Beijing by the British and French armies. Afternoon: Visit the Fragrant Hills Park to admire the red leaves (approximately 1.5 hours).
