Gugong, also known as the Forbidden City, located in the center of Beijing, China, is the royal palace of China during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and one of the largest and best-preserved ancient wooden architectural complexes in the world. The palace complex was built in 1406, and served as the imperial palace for twenty-four emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties until 1925, when the Forbidden City Museum was officially established and opened to the public. The Forbidden City covers an area of about 720,000 square meters, with a floor area of about 150,000 square meters, has more than seventy palaces of various sizes, and the number of rooms is measured to be 8,707.
The Forbidden City is not only a palace, but also the epitome of China's 5,000 years of civilization. It carries rich historical and cultural information and is an important window to understand ancient Chinese politics, economy, culture and art.
